Everywhere we turn, we are inundated with news regarding COVID-19. One news article after the next seems to send us down the rabbit hole of negativity, stress, and anxiety as we all enter a new state of “normal” (whatever that is these days). Psychologists agree that mental health plays a significant role right now during the pandemic. As a dental practice owner, you undoubtedly feel anguish as you wonder how your practice will survive this downturn. Remember, though, that you’re a leader. You have an entire office staff that is counting on you. The downtime during the pandemic is ideal for recharging and re-energizing. But, you have to stay level headed. Today on the blog, Bryant Consultants wants to share three ways not to lose your mind during a crisis.

What’s the difference between distraction and traction?

These are two similar-sounding words, yet completely different meanings. Distraction pulls us away from our life goals, while traction is what draws us back on track. Here is how to shift your negative thinking to a positive mindset of refocused goals and new opportunities.

  1. Don’t let your mind wander

With all of this extra time on your hands, you probably find that you are now able to do a great deal of thinking. But, be careful not to let your thoughts wander too far into the field of negativity, stress, and anxiety. One of the worst things that you could do is go down the mental rabbit trail of “what if” scenarios. Before you know it, you’ve conjured up enough stressful thoughts that you begin losing sleep or feeling moody and snappy toward everyone around you.

Instead of feeling anxious by wondering what will happen, focus on what is happening. If worrisome thoughts creep into your mind, keep distracted by doing something you enjoy. Maybe you keep a good book handy, dial a friend or family member to chat, play with your kids, or tend to your favorite hobby. Better yet, sit down and start writing about your goals, both professionally and personally, and devise a plan on how to reach them. Start your day out by setting personal goals, and stay focused, working toward them each day.

  1. Push out negative thoughts

Always thinking the worst isn’t helpful. You may worry about whether you or your family will get sick, and the same of your employees, or how your practice is going to make it through the pandemic. Of course, these are legitimate concerns, but there is a difference in dwelling on the worst-case (when it might not even happen), versus developing solutions for what actually is happening. Focus on what you can control. For instance, you can control practicing social distancing and good hand hygiene to prevent the spread of COVID-19. You can control how you choose to lead your team a pandemic or take steps to recession-proof your practice. But, don’t waste your brainpower simply worrying about things that are out of your control. Remain positive because your thoughts control your actions. If you must, turn off the news and disconnect from your phone for a while. Focus on things that make you feel happy and positive.

  1. Let go of your anxiety

It’s easy to let anxiety hijack your thoughts. We all are living in a time when we feel anxious as we wait for the next alarming statistic or news regarding COVID-19. It’s natural to feel ever-present anxiety these days. But, one thing is for sure, there are a lot of certainties in your life right now. Everyone’s certainties are going to be different, but maybe you have a loving spouse (or significant other), amazing kids, a comfortable home, and plenty of food to eat. You might be missing your relatives right now, or bummed about special events you planned on attending that got canceled, but don’t let anxiety take hold over you and your thoughts. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Counselors, physiologists, and even our very own dental practice consultants at Bryant Consultants are able and willing to help you get through this pandemic. Don’t try to do it alone.

The most important things to remember are to stay focused, remain positive, and find rest in what you know is certain. As Abraham Lincoln once said, this too shall pass.
