The novel coronavirus pandemic has certainly impressed upon nearly everyone in the world with access to the media. Many adults already deal with stress related to their jobs, family, health, and finances. These stressors magnify with the current global pandemic. If you work in a dental practice, you probably are concerned about your health and safety during this tumultuous time, or how you will take care of your kids while you’re at work. It is entirely natural to feel stressed during the coronavirus pandemic. Today on the blog, Bryant Consultants wants to share five tips on how to manage stress during the COVID-19 crisis.

  1. Take slow, deep breaths

Of course, you breathe constantly, but you probably don’t realize how your breathing changes during moments of stress. Slow, conscious breathing with deep breaths through the nose will increase the oxygenation in your blood and promote mental clarity. It also helps slow your thoughts so that you can actually concentrate and devise solutions for your problems.

  1. Make time to reflect

Research shows that you are a better problem solver and gain more insight when your mind is clear. Take time to reflect on your thoughts, either through quiet time alone or consider meditation. Set some boundaries with your family and ensure they respect your quiet time.

  1. Stop complaining all of the time

We all have our days, and ranting and raving can help take the edge off. But, continually complaining and having a negative attitude isn’t doing yourself, or anyone around you, any good. If you need to get something off your chest, limit your rants to no more than 10 minutes, and get over it. Don’t let it run into tomorrow, either. When a reminder from yesterday’s worries creep up, stop in your tracks, and take deep breaths.

  1. Practice self-care

Exercise at least 30 minutes a day. This could be following along to an exercise routine before you leave for work, or consist of a walk during your lunch break. Try not to exercise too close to bedtime, but other than that, there isn’t a right or wrong time to break a sweat. According to research, exercise helps relax the mind, and it will help you sleep better too. Chances are, stress makes it difficult for you to sleep. But, continue practicing good sleep habits, like going to bed and waking up at the same time every night.

  1. Talk to a professional

The coronavirus pandemic is serious; there is no denying it. But, we each can do our part to help fight this thing, and the challenges it throws in our paths. If you feel like you’ve done your best to manage your own stress, but still are left feeling uneasy, reach out to a professional that can help.
