Way 1: New Furniture
When you walk into any business, one of the first things you’re likely to notice is the furniture. After all, you’re going to be spending some time in the waiting room, so you want to pick out the best spot to sit. If your waiting room furnishings look old or handed down, it reflects poorly on the image of your practice. Consider upgrading. Other waiting-room refurbishments can include entertainment, such as magazines or television, and an area where children can play.
Way 2: Room Design
We’ve all received medical care and ended up in an office where every room looks the same. Incorporating a design element into each room makes your practice more inviting for your patients. Natural elements such as potted plants can be a great addition; they can evoke feelings of calmness and serenity, which is ideal for nervous patients. Don’t have a green thumb? Use artificial plants instead. Wall decor, such as photographs and artwork, is another way to add to your practice’s appeal.
Way 3: Background Noise
Loud noises can startle and elevate blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing. Going to the dentist can be stressful for many people, so maintaining a calm environment is key. Soothing music or white noise helps ease the mind and creates a calming effect.
Way 4: Alter the Lighting and Temperature
Make the most of any natural lighting sources, such as windows. For other light sources in your office, we recommend LEDs as opposed to fluorescents. LEDs are less jarring and also do not give off heat as fluorescent bulbs can. Temperature is another factor. Some people get cold easily while others run hot. You’re not going to make everyone happy, but setting the thermostat around 72 degrees is a nice average.
Way 5: Make Them Feel Welcome
Are your office staff engaging patients from the moment they arrive? Are they happy and helpful? A warm greeting goes a long way toward fostering an atmosphere of trust and building a relationship between your practice and team and your patients. It starts from the second a patient steps into your office. Make sure someone greets them with a warm smile and a hello. Use their name. This first point of contact should be made by someone with a warm, kind-hearted personality.
