More people are also traveling abroad for dental procedures, a practice known as “dental tourism.” Countries like Mexico, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic and Thailand offer high-quality dental care at significantly lower prices than in the U.S. However, this option is not accessible to everyone and carries risks such as limited follow-up care.
The Need for Policy Changes
The economic challenges affecting dental care affordability highlight the need for systemic changes. Expanding dental coverage under public health programs, increasing funding for community dental clinics, and promoting employer-sponsored dental benefits could make a significant difference. Additionally, improving financial education about oral health and preventive care can help people make informed decisions that may reduce the need for costly procedures in the future.
